Gand & Bernardel
Violin
GAND Charles Nicolas Eugène (1825–1892).
He served his apprenticeship in his father’s workshop and became a partner of his brother Charles Adolphe in 1855. Some instruments were made in collaboration with the two Bernardel brothers. In 1866, the two firms merged under the name Gand et Bernardel Frères. Eugène Gand retained the artistic direction of the firm; in 1886, the elder of the Bernardel brothers retired, but the firm Gand et Gust. Bernardel continued at 4 Passage Saulnier. Instruments made in collaboration are of fine workmanship and are highly appreciated by orchestral musicians.
BERNARDEL Gustave Adolphe (1832–1904).
Second son and pupil of Auguste Sébastien Bernardel, he became associated with his father as early as 1859 and, in 1866, a partner of Gand. He became the sole owner of the firm in 1892; three years before his death, he transferred it to Albert Caressa and Henri François. This old and highly renowned firm still exists today at 12 rue de Madrid under the sole name Henri Français. Fine work following the principles of the master Lupot, with an oil varnish tending toward a light reddish-brown.
