Pierre Hel, Lille
Cello
HEL Pierre Jean Henri.
Son of Pierre Joseph. Born in Lille in 1884, died in 1937. He served his apprenticeship with Bazin in Mirecourt and further perfected his skills with his father, whose workshop he took over in 1902. He obtained the title of luthier to the Conservatory of The Hague. His work is among the most remarkable. He received distinctions at the exhibitions of St. Louis (U.S.A.) in 1904, Milan in 1906, and Roubaix in 1911. Two violins were awarded prizes at the Geneva tone competition in 1927. Pierre Hel’s repair work earned him the praise of the greatest virtuosos.
Madame Hel continued the business, assisted by his chief workman, Marcel Demey. The latter established himself in Lille in 1943, while nevertheless continuing to render valuable services to his master’s widow, for whom he had worked for more than forty years.
