Léon Mougenot Gauché
Violin
1874–1954
He began his career with Emile Laurent in Brussels, then became a pupil and assistant to his father’s first cousin, George Mougenot, also in Brussels, from 1887 to 1894. He subsequently worked with Blanchard in Lyon from 1894 to 1896, with P. Jombar in Paris from 1896 to 1898, and with the Hill brothers in London. In 1899, he established his own workshop in his native city. Since that time, he trained more than 35 French and foreign pupils. This record is one of the proofs of the esteem enjoyed by his workshop. In 1909, he was awarded the gold medal at the International Exhibition in Nancy. His work is fine lutherie based on the models of Stradivari, Guarneri, Lupot, and Vuillaume. His oil-based spirit varnish ranges from amber red to brownish red.
